The series of hacks by law enforcement of dark web gangs is still on everyone’s mind. British authorities recently busted an anonymous dark web group known for selling ecstasy and collecting millions of dollars in cryptocurrencies.

Group selling ecstasy, amphetamine and diazepam on various darknet forums

According to The Independent, the National Crime Agency (NCA) has launched an operation targeting several homes in the North East of England, including the South Tyneside area.

Authorities became concerned and sounded the alarm after large shipments of ecstasy were intercepted last year. All the packages had the same final destinations, including the United States, Israel, Norway, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia and even the United Kingdom, the NMA said.

In addition, law enforcement monitored crypto messages exchanged by the defendants that were allegedly associated with illegal drug transactions and money laundering through cryptocurrency trading.

The NMA seized 90 kg of ecstasy, 134 kg of amphetamine and more than 6,000 diazepam tablets. According to the authorities, the total black market value of the production is about 4.3 million pounds ($5.9 million).

The results show that the gang did not have a website to sell drugs. Instead, they used anonymous dark web forums and used usernames such as HundredsUK, Hundandthousands, Sundaefundae and 100and1000s.

US authorities supportoperation

Moreover, the investigators established that the drugs had been imported from the Netherlands. As a result of the operation, British police in South Tyneside arrested two men, aged 24 and 31, who were allegedly involved in a criminal organisation.

Martin Clarke, director of operations for the NCA, provided more details on the deal:

We work closely with our partners in the United States to target those who exploit vulnerable populations and disrupt communities. This research shows that those who try to use the dark web and encrypted communication tools to commit crimes anonymously can be identified. There are two men from South Shields we are still looking for who we think are overseas.

However, despite recent attempts by the authorities to take over the major illegal markets, sales on the darknet market continue to grow.

As Bitcoin.com News reported in February 2021, darknet markets brought in a total of $1.7 billion in cryptocurrencies in 2020, an all-time high.
